If you have a torch, you might not know that you need to maintain it so it stays reliable. No judgement here, it wasn't until college that I learned you had to change toothbrushes every 4 months. And to ensure your torch stays a key part of your lifestyle, follow these simple tips to help you get the most out of it.

Keep It Clean
This seems like a no-brainer, but we're just covering our bases here. As you use your torch, residue and butane buildup can clog your torch and weaken the flame. And unless you’re smoking on the International Space Station (invite me next time if you are), there’s going to be dust buildup as well.
How to clean it:
-
Use a soft brush (like an old toothbrush after 4 months) or compressed air to clear out any debris in and around the nozzle
-
Wipe down the exterior regularly with a cloth and a bit of isopropyl alcohol (don’t soak it)
-
Check the ignition button and flame port for grime or buildup
-
Avoid poking anything sharp into the nozzle as that may damage it
Use High-Quality Butane
You are what you eat, and for torches they need to eat high-quality butane to function as a high-quality torch. Low-grade fuel can clog your torch and leave behind residue that shortens its lifespan.
Look for:
-
Refined butane (5x or higher)
-
Brands that advertise “low impurity” or “zero clog” formulas
-
Avoid off-brand or hardware-store butane when possible

Bleed Before You Refill
If you don’t know what bleeding your torch is, then you’re not alone. Some people use torches without doing it at all. Bleeding, or purging, your torch is releasing any leftover air pressure before refilling it. This avoids overfilling, and helps your flame consistent, adding to the overall lifespan of your torch.
How to bleed (your torch):
-
Hold the torch upside down
-
Press the refill valve with a small tool or pen to release air (you’ll hear a hiss)
-
Once the hissing stops, you’re good to refill

Refill Safely
There is a proper way to refill your torch, and in doing so will keep it running smooth and avoid leaks or flare-ups. Keeping these in mind will ensure a consistent flame (and consistent eyebrows).
Refilling your torch the right way keeps it running smooth and avoids leaks or flare-ups.
Best practices:
-
Always refill in a well-ventilated space
-
Hold the torch upside down to prevent air pockets
-
Insert the butane can nozzle firmly and straight into the refill port
-
Wait a few minutes after filling to let the fuel stabilize

Store Smart
When you’re done using your torch, you should also make sure you put it in a good spot. You should make sure to leave it in a place where it won’t be damaged or knocked over.
-
Keep it upright and cool when not in use
-
Avoid leaving it in hot cars, direct sun, or near heaters
-
If traveling, use a protective case to prevent accidental ignition or damage
We have a handstand that can be used to place any of our torches to display as well as to keep them in a safe, reliable spot.

Keep the Flame Alive
Keeping all these tips in mind will maximize the lifespan and potential for your torch, saving you money and time in the long run. Just a few simple things can exponentially increase its usability over time. Need a torch built for performance and portability?
